Travelers using the new bridges recently completed as part of the Ohio River Bridges Project will soon have to pay to cross. Tolling on the Lewis and Clark, Abraham Lincoln and Kennedy bridges is set to begin early Friday morning.

The all-electronic RiverLink tolling system, which has been undergoing testing over the past few months, will begin on the three bridges at 4:00 a.m. The Indiana Department of Transportation says tolling will not change the commutes for drivers; Sensors will read transponders purchased by drivers and deduct from their prepaid accounts while those without transponders will receive bills in the mail after cameras capture their license plates.

Tolling rates for the system were approved in May. RiverLink says more than 150,000 transponders had been requested to date with nearly 67,000 families and more than 2,200 businesses opening accounts. More than 110,000 drivers are expected to use the tolled bridges each day.

In July, RiverLink opened two service centers, one in Louisville and another in Jeffersonville, to assist customers.

Officials cut the ribbon earlier this month on the Lewis and Clark Bridge, previously known as the East End Crossing, which was the last portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project to be complete. The Downtown Crossing portion of the project, which includes the new Lincoln Bridge and renovated Kennedy Bridge, was fully opened to traffic in November.
