The final testing for the new all-electronic tolling system being installed as part of the Ohio River Bridges Project is about to begin. RiverLink says test vehicles will soon begin the crossing the East End, Kennedy and Lincoln bridges in Southern Indiana to make sure the system is working properly.

Previous testing had been conducted in lab-type setting in New York, in which vehicles passed through toll gantries on a test track. The system simulated customers using an account management system.

"The accuracy of all tolling transactions is paramount, which is why the entire system is undergoing such rigorous testing," said Jim Stark, deputy commissioner of innovative project delivery for the Indiana Department of Transportation. "When we have confirmed that the system is fully operational, tolling will begin."

Tolling rates were approved in May and RiverLink says a start date for tolling will be announced after the final testing has been completed. More than 70,000 RiverLink transponders have been requested and more than 110,000 drivers are expected to use the bridges each day.

RiverLink says more than 30,000 families and more than 1,200 businesses have opened accounts for the tolling system.
