South Bend International Airport is planning a multimillion-dollar expansion aimed at improving the experience for travelers.
Our partners at WSBT-TV report the project, plans for which are still being finalized, is designed to make it easier for people to get to and from the airport.
The plans include two lanes between the parking lot and building entrances, one of which will be used specifically for taxis and buses, with the other for pickups and drop-offs.
“We’re going to build what’s called a commercial transportation lane that will allow for the buses in the taxi cabs and sometimes the trucks and tractor trailers that try to come through to be on a road a little bit more removed from the terminal building,” Airport Executive Director Mike Daigle told WSBT.
Daigle noted having a dedicated lane for picking up and dropping off passengers will also provide more overhead cover from rain and snow.
The project has an estimated $14 million price tag, but the airport noted that number may change as plans are finalized. Daigle noted that no tax dollars will be used on the project.
Construction is slated to begin this summer and take about a year to complete.
The project follows several other improvements recently completed at the airport. Last month, officials cut the ribbon on a new, $7.3 million Consolidated Quick Turnaround Facility designed to allow the airport’s rental car operators to perform back-of-house services more efficiently.
Last November, the airport opened a new business center within its concourse in partnership with Notre Dame Federal Credit Union.
