The mayor of Mount Vernon is resigning, about five months after being elected to a third term. The Evansville Courier & Press reports John Tucker will step down March 1 due to health concerns.
The publication says Tucker served as a city councilman for 12 years and was a police officer in Mount Vernon for 33 years. The 70-year-old mayor informed the city council Thursday of his decision.
"I had talked to several of them, and they knew I was having some health issues," Tucker told the Courier & Press. "It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of when. I was elected to a full-time job, but with all the stuff I’ve got going on I don’t feel I’m giving 100 percent, and that’s not right."
Tucker said it is difficult to leave because of the city’s ongoing projects. However, he told the publication that his health had to take precedence.
Tucker’s successor will be chosen by a Democratic party caucus.
