Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has announced plans for the city to become a TenPoint Coalition city. The mayor’s office says the move is the next step in the city’s efforts to improve the lives on residents by implementing proactive strategies "to reduce violence and emphasize the importance of education, employment, and community partnerships."

The TenPoint Coalition originated in Indianapolis. Henry’s office says the city expects to become an official TenPoint Coalition city later this year. In doing so, the city will identify a neighborhood to examine the areas of crime, education, health, and housing as well as how to improve residents’ quality of life and explore opportunities for growth.

Henry made the announcement Wednesday alongside Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, Indianapolis TenPoint Coalition President Reverend Dr. Charles Harrison, and other community and business leaders.

"I’m encouraged by the enthusiasm and optimism that exists in our community as we come together to address challenges and work to provide hope and opportunities," Henry said in a news release. "I appreciate and value the partnership with Attorney General Hill and Reverend Harrison. We share a common commitment and dedication to doing all we can to help residents and neighborhoods grow and thrive in a safe environment. The quality of life for our residents in Fort Wayne is critical to the current and future viability of our community."

As part of the announcement, Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne has committed $10,000 in annual grant funding for three years to help establish the coalition.

The decision comes more than a month after the city of Gary launched its chapter of the TenPoint Coalition.

National Diabetes Month: The business case for battling diabetes in Indianapolis

Diabetes has exploded in the U.S. and Indiana. Today, there is a greater than one-in-three chance you know someone in Indiana who has been diagnosed with diabetes (Type I, Type II or gestational), is prediabetic or doesn’t know they have diabetes. I know this from experience – my mother was diabetic, and my wife has had Type I diabetes since she was 13 years old....
