GARY -

An organization that works to reduce youth gun violence in Indianapolis will Friday launch its first chapter outside the city. The TenPoint Coalition, which started nearly 20 years ago in Indianapolis, will host a press conference in Gary featuring Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill and Gary TenPoint President Reverend Dyke Lee Sr.

Gary Police Chief Richard Allen and Indianapolis TenPoint President Reverend Charles Harrison will also be in attendance at First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Last year, the organization also discussed potential chapters with leaders in Fort Wayne and Kokomo.

The organization works to bring together faith, community, business, law enforcement and court representatives to address issues that cause violence. It also promotes education and fosters employment opportunities in troubled neighborhoods. The concept of the TenPoint Coalition dates back to Boston in the mid-1990s during a rash of gangs and violence. The Indianapolis chapter says its strategies have led to significant reductions in violence in multiple areas throughout the city.
