For the last nine years, Melissa Schroeder and her husband have sold honey and educated others about beekeeping under the name Growing Success Farm. They were customers of Dogwood Ridge Bees, whose owners approached the Schroders about a possible sale.
The acquisition was announced earlier this week, and the Schroeders’ company has rebranded to Growing Success Bee Co.
“You have to kind of travel far away down to Kentucky or maybe Indianapolis or further to find anything similar to what we have,” Melissa Schroeder told Inside INdiana Business. “We carry everything that a beekeeper would need from a beginner to experienced.”
At the Boonville store, the company manufactures wooden ware for beehives. Community members can attend free monthly classes covering topics such as hive installation, maintenance, inspection and honey extraction.
“[Bees are] the future. Without bees, we have no food, so it’s incredibly important for us to pass on all of this education that we have,” Schroeder said. “It’s not hard, but there is a learning curve. We want to help support people to be able to do that and to succeed.”
Financial terms of the deal are not being disclosed. Melissa and her husband Dan are the only two employees, and the store will remain in Boonville.
In the future, the Schroders hope to expand and host field trips so kids can learn about bees.
“We’re just very thrilled to be able to be here and share our passion with others,” she said. “We want to be able to offer more with offerings of honey and even fun gift shop items to be able to bring in not just beekeepers, but people that just love bees.”
