The DePauw University Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to appoint a vice chancellor at Washington University in St. Louis as the school’s next president. Lori White will succeed Mark McCoy, becomes the first woman and the first person of color to serve as president of DePauw.

White will begin her new role July 1.

“Throughout the interview process, I’ve been deeply impressed by this community of extraordinary faculty who challenge students to think and learn broadly, supportive staff who care about each student’s experience and students and alumni who exemplify the transformational impact of a DePauw education,” said White.

White has more than 30 years of experience in both student-focused leadership and academics. She’s held a variety of administrative roles during her career, including Southern Methodist University, the University of Southern California, San Diego State University and Stanford University.

“Dr. White’s ability to engage authentically with all constituents has contributed greatly to her success at world-class institutions,” said Kathy Patterson Vrabeck, chair of the Board of Trustees. “She understands that the student experience is best served when academics, co-curricular experiences and residential life are considered holistically. “

DePauw says higher education is deeply engrained in White’s family.  Her husband also works at Washington University. Her sister is the director of education at the University of California Museum of Paleontology.  Her father was the first African American to receive a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Michigan State University.
