Indiana House Speaker-elect Todd Huston (R-Fishers) has been unanimously selected to succeed House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis.) Huston is set to be sworn in as speaker just before the end of 2020 session.

Bosma announced plans to leave the Indiana Statehouse last month. Bosma will preside over 2020 session, then resign from House sometime after May primary.

First elected in 2012, Huston represents House District 37, which includes Fishers and a portion of Hamilton County. He will be the third speaker since 2002.

Huston serves as co-chair of the Ways and Means Committee and will step down once he’s sworn in. Although he is set to remain on the committee, Tim Brown (R-Crawfordsville) will resume full control of the Ways and Means Committee upon Huston’s induction into the new role.

Indiana House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) today issued the following statement on the selection of Indiana House Speaker-elect Todd Huston (R-Fishers):

“I look forward to working with Speaker-elect Huston in making sure that the House conducts a healthy and vigorous debate on the issues that concern Hoosiers across our state. Indiana House Democrats are ready to serve Hoosiers first by making health care more accessible and affordable, providing children with quality care that their parents can afford, investing in public education, giving teachers the pay raise they deserve and ensuring that our children can go to school to learn in a safe environment.”

Governor Eric Holcomb also backed Huston, saying his experience would serve the position well.

“Todd Huston is a home run pick for Indiana House Speaker. He has proven himself a strong leader and has touched so many facets of state government through the budget process. Having a year to learn from Speaker Bosma will prove invaluable. I look forward to working with him and Sen. Bray going forward.”

Huston previously served on the Hamilton Southeastern School Board, Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation Board, Fishers Planning Commission and Indiana Leadership Forum Board of Directors.
