Zionsville Joins Opioid Fight

Zionsville has consistently ranked among the safest cities in Indiana on a number of lists.

The town of Zionsville is the latest Indiana community to join a lawsuit against wholesale drug distributors in the fight against the opioid epidemic. Mayor Tim Haak says the town is suing the three largest distributors in the country, which brings the number of communities filing suit to two dozen.

Zionsville says the distributors, Ohio-based Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH), McKesson Corp. (NYSE: MCK) in California and Pennsylvania-based AmerisourceBergen Corp. (NYSE: ABC), are responsible for putting millions of dollars in prescription opiates into the community, making the opioid epidemic possible.

"Wholesale drug distributors have failed in their legal obligation to monitor, report and halt suspicious shipments of opioids," Haak said in a news release. "Zionsville is joining other Indiana communities to hold these manufacturers and distributors accountable so we can protect the health and safety of our residents."

The town says it is working with a consortium of law firms on the lawsuit and no taxpayer dollars will be used. Other communities that have filed suit against drug distributors include Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Bloomington and Monroe County, Noblesville, Muncie and Terre Haute, among others.
