Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana Inc. has broken ground on a $3 million renovation at its new headquarters in downtown Indianapolis. The facility, which the organization describes as a mentoring hub, is part of its $7 million RISE campaign connected to a goal of serving 1,500 children in the region by 2022. The building was a previous home of WFYI Public Media and a hardware store.
In a recent interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Board of Directors President Susan Brock Williams and board member Aaron Boyle described the need for the facility and what it will do for volunteers, employees and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. "We’ll have activities like training our ‘bigs,’ having match activities, as we call them, so we get our matches together on a regular basis to do fun things — cooking, play games, whatever," Brock Williams said. "We’ll also have fundraising events there, nice receptions for our donors and supporters, so there’s a lot that we can do in the building. One exciting thing we’re having in the lobby is a slide that comes from the second floor down to the first floor, so hopefully, the matches will have fun doing that."
Boyle says the building itself cost around $1.8 million and will be a "much more comfortable place" for employees and serve as a more centralized location for everyone involved with and participating in the three-county organization.
