The transfer of the iconic Wigwam in Anderson to a private group looking to revive the gym is being pushed back a few days. Our partners at the Herald-Bulletin report a change in state law requires city council approval for the Anderson Redevelopment Commission to transfer ownership to Wigwam Sports & Entertainment LLC. The move is expected to save the aging gymnasium from demolition.

The building had been owned by the Anderson Community School Corp., which shuttered the 1960s-era gym in 2011 due to budget constraints. The district previously approved $100,000 to help push the deal forward.

The Anderson City Council meets Thursday evening and is expected to approve the deal. Redevelopment Commission Attorney Ann Marie Bauer expects the transfer to be complete no later than July 14.
