White River Vision Plan Enters Second Phase

Officials in Marion and Hamilton counties will later this month host another round of public meetings to discuss the White River Vision Plan. The effort, a collaboration among the city of Indianapolis, Visit Indy and Hamilton County Tourism Inc., has moved into its second phase, which will focus on development issues such as destinations, recreational opportunities and accessibility opportunities.

The White River Vision Plan aims to enhance nearly 60 miles of the White River. Organizers say the new designations and recreational assets will have a focus on areas with ecological, historical, cultural, significance and important neighborhood adjacencies. 

"The second phase of the White River Vision Plan is very exciting because it gives the community a moment to think really big," said Emily Mack, director of the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development. "Because access to the river is practically non-existent in a large part of the study area, how we transport ourselves by foot, car, or bicycle will be one of the largest points of discussion during this time."

The three public meetings will take place at the following dates and locations:

Tuesday, October 23: 6-8 p.m.

Founders Park/Wilfong Pavilion
11675 Hazel Dell Pkwy, Carmel

Wednesday, October 24: 12-1:30 p.m.

Rhodius Park
1720 W. Wilkins St., Indianapolis

Wednesday, October 24: 6-7:30 p.m.

ROWPort: Edison School of the Arts
777 S. White River Pkwy, Indianapolis

Those who cannot attend any of the meetings can still submit comments and ideas through a survey on the project’s website. 

Organizers say the 12-month planning period for the project is expected to be complete in April. The final plan will then be shared with the public, as well as stakeholder groups and organizations.
