The 8th annual New Year’s Eve Watermelon Drop in Vincennes will be the first legacy event of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration. The event has attracted national attention over the years, including coverage on CNN, CBS and in Smithsonian magazine.
This year’s event will feature a nighttime air show and music by the band Hot Rod Lincoln. There will also be a fireworks show, followed by 16 watermelons dropping onto a "splatform" at midnight. The city has hosted the event since 2008.
The state is organizing a variety of events to mark its 200th anniversary. Among them is a 2,300-mile relay that will take the Indiana Bicentennial Torch through all 92 counties. It beings in Corydon on September 9.
