A $40 million warehouse is being planned for a 78-acre site near the former Majestic Star Casino along Lake Michigan in Gary.
Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report a developer is targeting the investment at the former Lehigh Cement Co. plant at Buffington Harbor.
SP TP Gary Development LLC acquired the site last week from the Gary Redevelopment Commission for $4.7 million. Gary Redevelopment Director Christopher Harris told the publication that the developer plans to build a warehouse and distribution center with a manufacturing element.
Harris said the project could create hundreds of jobs, though a specific number wasn’t provided.
“This project is aligned with Mayor [Eddie] Melton’s vision of providing job opportunities to our residents and leveraging our world-class transportation infrastructure within our city limits,” Harris told The Times.
The developer aims to break ground in the second quarter, and construction could take about 14 months to complete.
