The college has pledged to work with other schools and with the University of Southern California’s Race and Equity Center to focus on racial equality.
The Alliance is led by Dr. Shaun Harper, who has visited Wabash to interview members of the Malcom X Institute of Black Studies during his research on college success for Black men. Another leader in forming the Alliance was DePauw University President Lori White.
“The founding members of this Alliance are working with the Race and Equity Center to learn about how to foster a more welcoming environment here at Wabash,” said President Scott Feller.
Feller says the move will allow college faculty and staff to be involved in virtual discussions of racial equity by leaders of higher education associations and race relations scholars, along with specialists from the Race and Equity Center.
“The resources provided through this Alliance and the Race and Equity Center will provide the tools we need to support our current students and the ‘new majority’ students who will enroll at Wabash in the years to come,” added President Feller. “Wabash is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and rooting out systemic racism wherever it exists.”
Feller adds the college will also be able to take part in two workplace climate surveys, with one for faculty and another for staff, that will focus on how various groups of employees experience the workplace environment differently. The partnership is helped by a grant from Lilly Endowment and its Charting the Future initiative.
