Virtual NCAA Convention Begins

The NCAA has kicked off its annual convention with this year’s event being held in a virtual format for the first time. The three-week event will include a series of meetings, including the Division I Council, which will consider legislation to change the rules on the use of name, image and likeness (NIL) of student-athletes.
While the NIL legislation is not set for a vote until the Division I Board of Directors meets on Thursday, multiple news outlets are reporting that it will likely be tabled. The legislation was introduced in October and, if approved, would allow student-athletes to earn money through endorsements and other avenues.
On Tuesday, NCAA President Mark Emmert will deliver his State of College Sports address. Additionally, he will present the 2021 NCAA President’s Pat Summitt Award to Nancy Stevens, the recently-retired head coach of UConn’s field hockey program who is the winningest coach in NCAA field hockey history.
Officials from the organization’s Division II and Division III will also meet during the event.
The NCAA Convention runs through January 27. You can view the full schedule for the event by clicking here.
