A gift from two Valparaiso graduates and long-time benefactors will support the school’s Writing Center and College of Engineering. The $1 million in support from Judy Rockett Beumer and Dick Beumer will go toward the Judith L. Beumer Endowed Writing Program Fund and the Beumer College of Engineering Fund.
As a result of the gift, Valpo says its on-campus writing center will be known now as the Judith L. Beumer Writing Center.
Judy Beumer says "the ability to present their thoughts and ideas in writing is essential for Valpo students to succeed in the classroom and, after graduating, in the workplace. Dick and I are blessed to be able to establish an endowed fund in support of the Writing Center. We hope that the permanent source of funds will allow the program to help even more students strengthen their writing skills."
Judy, a member of the University Guild and previous Alumni Board member, graduated from Valpo in 1960. Dick graduated in 1959 and served on the school’s board of directors from 1990 to 2016. He’s a distinguished alumni recipient and was inducted into the Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. In his professional life, Dick was chief executive officer of Sverdrup Corp. and vice chairman of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.
The gift supports the school’s Forever Valpo: The Campaign for Our Future, which has raised more than $152 million of a $250 million goal.
