Nearly three dozen nonprofit organizations are the recipients of $1.2 million in grants awarded this month by United Way of Central Indiana.
The funding was awarded to nonprofits outside of United Way’s accredited partner network, marking the first time such an effort has been done.
United Way said $500,000 is being awarded to 27 nonprofits from its Basic Needs Fund, which focuses on safe and affordable housing, healthy food access, transportation and health services. The remainder was awarded to eight nonprofits from the Family Opportunity Fund, which aims to improve the education, financial stability and well-being of the whole family.
“Nearly 40% of Central Indiana households are living in, or one emergency away from, poverty,” Shannon Jenkins, vice president of impact for United Way, said in a news release. “These grants to non-accredited organizations, guided by United Way’s strategic aim of increasing and diversifying investment in under-resourced areas, will support operations, services and programming – and outcomes supporting more people and families throughout Central Indiana.”
United Way said the effort to award grants to nonprofits outside of its accredited network is part of its new strategic plan announced in 2023.
