Eight nonprofits will benefit from more than $1 million in grants from United Way of Central Indiana. Recipients include child care, mental health and low-cost legal service organizations. October 3, 2013

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) is awarding more than $1.1 million to help eight local agencies with capital improvement and facilities maintenance projects. The grants are over and above United Way allocations for programs and administration.

Day Nursery Association is being awarded $460,968 to add a new infant and toddler center at 16th and Montcalm in Indianapolis. The facility will accommodate 60 infants and toddlers as part of United Way's focus on increasing access to high quality, affordable early child programs. Research shows that quality child care can help make a difference in a child's success in school and in life, and the impact is greater for low-income children.

Horizon House Inc. is receiving $211,364 to combine existing medical and mental health clinics into an integrated primary health care clinic operated by Wishard Health Services. Horizon House is the only day center in Indianapolis exclusively serving homeless individuals. Located in Center Township within walking distance of most of the overnight shelters, Horizon House is ideally situated to serve Marion County’s homeless population.

Legal Aid Society Inc.-Indianapolis is receiving $211,358 to expand its space in the English Foundation building. The move will enable the agency to expand services to low-income people with legal problems by co-locating with the Indiana Bar Foundation. Together, the two organizations will collaborate to provide more pro bono legal services. Legal Aid currently assists more than 8,000 clients a year.

Crossroads of America, Boy Scouts of America is receiving $137,500 to enhance the Scout Activity Center at Camp Belzer by adding a climbing wall, enclosing a teaching deck, and enhancing the kitchen. These improvements will result in more in-depth programming capability.

Four agencies will receive a total of $110,066 for building maintenance projects. Childrens Bureau Inc. is receiving $37,767 to replace a roof at the Rachel Glick Courage Center, 2115 Central Avenue; JCC Indianapolis is receiving $31,832 for roof and heating and air conditioning repairs; Little Red Door Cancer Agency is receiving $23,988 to replace heating and air conditioning units; and, Forest Manor Multi-Service Center Inc. is receiving $16,479 for wall and window repairs.

Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded a total of $127.5 million to the Agency Capital Projects Fund since its creation in 2000, making possible the building of 133 major construction and renovation projects for human services in the region. Fund resources have also been used to finance 136 assessment grants to assist with thorough planning and implementation of projects. Finally, investment earnings totaling more than $7.5 million from the grant have been used to update agency technology and to offset unanticipated hikes in heating and transportation costs.
