Unemployment Rate Ticks Lower

Subscribe NowIndiana’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.3 percent in January, down from 3.4 percent the previous month. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state added 3,000 private sector jobs in the first month of the year.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show Indiana’s labor force decreased by nearly 7,300 in January, though the state’s labor force participation rate stands at 63.7 percent, one full point higher than the national rate.
The highest growth sectors for Indiana in January were construction and leisure and hospitality. However, the state saw losses in professional and building services, as well as mining and logging, IT, and other services.
Indiana continues to have the lowest unemployment of neighboring states, all of which remain above the national rate. Wisconsin is the only state in the Midwest to have a lower unemployment rate than Indiana.
