News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – City officials will join the University of Indianapolis on Thursday in breaking ground for a four-story, 480-occupant apartment building designed to expand housing options for students while beautifying and promoting new development along the important Shelby Street corridor.

The new Greyhound Village, named in a student contest, will feature 196 furnished units with one to four bedrooms, private baths, kitchens, living areas, and washers and dryers. The indoor and outdoor common spaces will include a deck overlooking a pond. Work will begin with the demolition of the 1950s-era apartments currently occupying the site, and construction will be completed in Summer 2016, allowing students to move in for that fall semester.

A joint venture with developer Strategic Capital Partners, the estimated $25 million project is part of UIndy’s ongoing plan to improve the campus experience while also elevating the quality of life in the surrounding University Heights neighborhood. Shelby Street connects the campus to the nearby Garfield Park and Fountain Square neighborhoods and also is the anticipated route of a bus rapid transit line through the city. By increasing UIndy’s residential capacity more than 30 percent, the apartments will help build the density needed to attract new merchants and development to the area.

For the groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, speakers will include:

– Jason Dudich, Chief of Staff for Mayor Greg Ballard

– Adam Theis, Director, Department of Metropolitan Development

– Gene Zink, Chairman and CEO, Strategic Capital Partners

– Robert Manuel, President, University of Indianapolis

– Michael Watkins, Member, UIndy Board of Trustees

– Kory Vitangeli, VP for Student & Campus Affairs and Dean of Students, UIndy

Greyhound Village was designed by architects Schmidt Associates. Construction will be overseen by general contractor CRG Residential.
