Phoenix-based U-Haul International has acquired the more than 86,000 square-foot property and plans to transform it into a U-Haul Moving and Storage facility.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, though the company said a news release it plans to hire 10 or more employees to staff the facility. U-Haul has already set up a temporary showroom as renovations on the building continue.
The company says, when complete, the U-Haul Moving & Storage of Morningside will include 40,000 square feet of self-storage units, including indoor climate-controlled rooms and outdoor drive-up units. The facility, which sits on nearly 10 acres of land at 1501 E. McGalliard Road, will also have propane and professional hitch installation.
"This deteriorating building had been sitting empty for three years," said Anthony Jones, president of U-Haul Co. of Central Indiana. "People were using it as a dump site, so there were old tires and furniture everywhere. U-Haul is excited to take this neglected property and turn it into an attractive moving and self-storage facility."
The building opened as a Kmart store in 1977 and closed in 2014.
