Trine breaks ground on new Student Design Center

Trine University has broken ground on a new $15 million facility on the Angola campus.
The Pellegrino Student Design Center is being developed as “a launching pad for innovation, creativity and collaboration,” according to Trine President Earl Brooks.
The 22,000-square-foot facility will feature a state-of-the-art robotics lab, an aeronautics lab, and a powertrain lab, among others, the university said. About 8,000 square feet will be dedicated fabrication space for use by seniors in the Allen School of Engineering and Computing.
“This facility represents a major leap forward for Trine University and our commitment to hands-on learning and career preparation,” Brooks said in a news release. “We’ll give our students an opportunity for a wide range of disciplines, from engineering to business and design technology and the opportunity to bring ideas to life in a space purposely built for teamwork, problem solving and discovery.”
Trine said the facility will also help the university expand workforce training opportunities for area high schools and businesses.
The name of the new building is in recognition of Trine alumni John Pellegrino and his wife, Mary, who provided financial support for the project. Pellegrino earned a civil engineering degree from Trine in 1960.
Construction is expected to take about 16 months to complete.
