Trine Beefs Up Broadcast Capabilities

Trine University has launched the Trine Broadcasting Network, which will incorporate university video production, athletic event live-streaming and the game-day experience at the recently-opened MTI Center. Josh Hornbacher, operations director of the campus radio station WEAX, will serve as executive producer of the network and Colin Meadowcroft has been named senior producer and creative specialist. The northeast Indiana school says it plans to build academic programs around the expanded capabilities.
Hornbacher says the broadcasting experiences will go beyond sports. "We have distinguished speakers that come, there are concerts here in the Furth Center, to be able to live-stream those events, yeah, it would move much further beyond simply sports," he told Inside INdiana Business, "but that’s a great place to begin, because so many of the students here are athletes. Students come from all over the country and their parents, and family and friends don’t always get to see them play. To have a high-quality, multi-camera production is a real benefit for families, in addition to students who are working these games."
Vice President of Marketing and Communications Dave Jarzyna calls the pair "ideally suited" to build the network. Trine Broadcasting Network is an outgrowth of the new production and broadcasting equipment installed in the more than $13 million MTI Center, which opened in January. The network, Trine says, will lead to hands-on learning opportunities for students and will widen the potential audience of the school and its athletic and non-athletic events.
Hornbacher says the games and larger events will take around 10-12 people to fully staff and the broadcasts could not happen without student involvement. The network’s foundation will be games broadcast from the MTI Center and the new Thunder Ice Arena, but Hornbacher says, eventually, he’s like to see multiple venues on campus used for streaming and multi-camera productions.
