Trine Announces Cybersecurity Major

ANGOLA, Ind. – With more Americans using the Internet and online risks increasing, Trine University is helping to tackle this growing crisis with the introduction of a major in cybersecurity. The announcement comes during National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
The Jannen School of Arts & Sciences will offer a Bachelor of Science in cybersecurity in fall 2014. The major will be grounded in science and mathematics in addition to courses in criminal justice, psychology, ethics, communication and electives. The Department of Homeland Security defines cyber security as the protection of computers and computer systems against unauthorized attacks or intrusion.
“Trine’s new major will prepare graduates to enter the fast-developing field of cybersecurity,” said John Shannon, Ph.D., vice president of academic affairs. “This major fits well with Trine’s objective to generate work-ready graduates who are able to tackle today’s challenges.”
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts job growth in the cybersecurity field, including job titles such as information security analysts, web developers and computer network architects, to grow 22 percent faster than average. In 2010, the latest year for which figures are available, median pay was $75,660 per year and there were 302,300 such jobs.
“Most businesses and industries rely on a computer network and access to the Internet, so individuals with this skill set will be in demand,” said Bill Barge, chair of the Department of Mathematics & Informatics that will offer the new major. “I think most of us knows someone who’s been adversely affected by computer viruses or scammers so it’s not difficult to recognize the need for this specialty.”
