Toll Road Operator Set to Launch Transportation System

Granger-based Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. says its previously-announced intelligent transportation system is set to begin operation in February. The $8 million effort follows the installation of 70 miles of fiber optic cable, which was completed earlier this year as part of the $220 million 80/90 PUSH Project.

The ITS includes several full-color dynamic message signs that will be able to display safety messages of potential road hazards, such as crashes, work zones and adverse weather conditions. It will also feature variable speed signs and roadside cameras that can detect road incidents in real time.

"The Intelligent Transportation System is being put into place to increase safety messaging to customers, reduce speeds during periods of inclement weather or road incidents, and allow for an increased level of traffic monitoring to improve ITRCC and first responder response times," said Rick Fedder, chief operating officer for ITR Concession Co. "All operational improvements are a means to continually drive road-safety throughout the corridor of the Indiana Toll Road."

Planning for the project began in 2016 with working beginning in February 2017.
