Governor Mike Pence says the winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship through the state’s CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan. He adds "it is a privilege to honor these outstanding young Hoosiers for their early successes and pursuit of excellence in the fields of science and mathematics. Their accomplishments are certain to inspire others, and I have every confidence that the future of Indiana is bright in the hands of students like these. This administration is proud to continue to promote STEM education and inspire our state’s science and industry leaders of tomorrow."
The students were nominated earlier this year and winners were chosen by a panel of STEM professionals, teachers, and university representatives.
The 2016 Mr. and Miss Indiana Math and Science Award winners are:
2016 Mr. Math
Eric Baeza is a senior at South Side High School in Fort Wayne. He is president of Math Club, which placed first at a regional competition, and the Math Academic Team, in which he qualified for state, among many other accomplishments.
2016 Miss Math
Jasmine Kalia is a senior at Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis. She is class valedictorian and is a National Merit Scholar. Among many other accomplishments, she has conducted research with professors at the IUPUI Physics Laboratory and the Nanotechnology Discovery Academy.
2016 Mr. Science
Sabin Karki is a senior at Terre Haute South Vigo High School. He plans to attend John Hopkins University to study biomedical engineering and eventually pursue dual MD/MBA degrees.
2016 Miss Science
Tingyue Cui is also a senior at Terre Haute South Vigo High School. She was an Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist and placed third in chemistry at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Cui hopes to study chemistry in college and graduate school, aiming to be a professor and researcher.
