The city’s Historic Preservation Commission is set to hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss a potential historic site designation for The Chocolate Moose.
The ice cream shop is in a distinctive, all-brown building in downtown Bloomington, not far from the Indiana University campus. The designation would provide protection for the building from being torn down.
A potential developer could demolish the summertime attraction and build a mixed-use development on the property. The building dates back to 1957.
Indiana Public Media reports locally-based H.M. Mac, would include first-floor commercial space as part of a four-story project. It also reports current owner, Doran May, would reopen The Chocolate Moose in the new building. The full project needs several steps of approval by the city.
The Historic Preservation Commission meeting is scheduled for 5:30 Thursday evening at City Hall.
Indiana Landmarks is urging residents to voice their support for saving the shop by attending the meeting.
