Temporary Layoffs Coming to Huntington

Michigan-based Continental Structural Plastics has announced plans to temporarily lay off more than 160 employees at its Huntington plant this summer. In a notice to the state, the company says the layoffs are the result of a customer suspending its contract with CSP for three months.

CSP says 164 employees will be out of work for those three months, beginning July 31, however Huntington County Economic Development Executive Director Mark Wickersham tells Inside INdiana Business the company has assured the employees that they will be recalled no later than fourth quarter 2017. Jerry Reid, plant manger in Huntington, said the decision came after "the company carefully analyzed this situation and its available options."

Wickersham says CSP is in the middle of a $33.5 million addition to its plant in Huntington. The project includes the new construction of 130,000 square feet of space and a remodeling of the existing 220,000 square-foot plant. 

CSP manufactures lightweight composite materials for the automotive, heavy truck, HVAC/industrial components, and building and construction industries. The company did not state which customer made the move which led to the layoffs.
