Teacher Residency Program Launching in Indy

The Relay Teaching Residency, part of the New York-based Relay Graduate School of Education, was supported by $3.5 million in funding from Indy-based nonprofit The Mind Trust.
The program is targeted toward college graduates and career changers seeking a path into the teaching profession. It is a two-year program that involves graduate coursework and experience leading a classroom. Graduates will earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
"As a former school leader in Indianapolis, I understand the challenges facing our schools," said Carlotta Cooprider, dean of Relay Indianapolis. "Through strategic coaching, ample practice, and a curriculum built to match classroom experiences, our residents are prepared to join the most important profession in the world."
Since 2015, nearly 40 school leaders in Indianapolis have attended Relay’s National Principal Academy Fellowship, according to The Mind Trust. The organization says the new residency program will build off that success by expanding the pipeline of high-quality teachers, particularly teachers of color.
"We are tremendously excited to welcome one of the nation’s top teacher preparation programs to Indianapolis," Brandon Brown, chief executive officer of The Mind Trust, said in a news release. "Relay’s hands-on residency model is a critically important step toward ensuring that every school in our city has access to high-quality teachers who reflect the rich diversity of our students."
