Global education company Pearson PLC has named former Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) Chief Executive Officer Sidney Taurel chairman of the board. He led Lilly from 1998-2008 and begins the new role January 1.

Taurel joined Lilly in 1971 and held several leadership positions, including with the company’s operations in South America and Europe. He holds degrees from École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Paris and Columbia University. His career also includes presidential appointments to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, the President’s Export Council and the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.

Taurel succeeds Glen Moreno, who will step down at the end of the year after more than a decade as chairman of the board.
