Patrick Talty, who had served as ISC’s chief operating officer for nearly three years, was promoted to president after Ryan Vaughn stepped down last month. Talty was a key player in helping Indianapolis host the entirety of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
In an interview with Bill Benner, Talty said competition for the big events comes from everywhere.
“It’s really important for us, I think, to stay competitive,” said Talty. “We have a rich history, but we have to act like we’ve never had these events before. We have to really show that we want the events, that we’re being creative, innovative. We’re being nimble. We’re responding to our rights holders that are hosting these events because really, at the end of the day, they are the most important customers that we have.”
One of the major events coming up in Indianapolis is the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium. Talty says the city is going to make the event the “Super Bowl of swimming.”
“Indiana has a rich history of swimming. Swim clubs and kids that have aspirations of the Olympics finally get to participate in swimming and see it first hand. It’s going to be nine nights of a fan fest. There’s going to be nine nights on Georgia Street. That’s like Super Bowl-esque activation, so there’s going to be something for everyone in the community.”
Talty adds he’s also excited about Indy’s continued presence in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 2024, 2025 and the Final Four in 2026.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity [to] really be innovative with the NCAA and really highlight their pillars of what they’re trying to achieve with that tournament.”
