Survey: Majority of Tech Hiring Managers Expect Job Growth

Robert Half Technology says 62 percent of hiring managers it surveyed in the city anticipate growing their teams — a figure higher than the national average. One-third expect to maintain current headcounts through the end of the year and only one percent expect to eliminate positions.
The most in-demand skill, the survey suggests, is cloud security. Robert Half Technology Indianapolis District President Jill Crowe says "improvements in automation and artificial intelligence are driving back-end IT hiring in Indianapolis, and we’re seeing a big push for cloud migration specialists as well as developers – specifically, database, ETL, business intelligence and automation developers. Candidates with in-demand skill sets are receiving multiple offers, and employers are realizing they need to expedite their hiring process. Employers who take longer than two weeks to hire have found themselves losing top candidates to competitors."
The findings show 70 percent of hiring managers are seeing more information technology professionals come to Indianapolis for job opportunities. Eighty-seven percent of those surveyed are experiencing challenges when it comes to recruiting talent. Confidence in the company’s prospects for the next six months is high: 97 percent of respondents in Indianapolis said they were confident or very confident.
The skills in demand, say the surveyed hiring managers, include:
- Cloud security – 54 percent
- Business intelligence and reporting services – 51 percent
- Cybersecurity – 48 percent
- Cloud computing – 46 percent
- Cloud architecture – 45 percent
- Database management (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server) – 39 percent
- Network administration (LAN, WAN) – 34 percent
- Web development/website design – 31 percent
- ERP implementation – 30 percent
- Blockchain – 29 percent
- Agile – 25 percent
- Desktop support (any operating system) – 24 percent
- Telecommunications support (VoIP) – 24 percent
- Virtualization – 22 percent
- Mobile development – 21 percent
- DevOps – 18 percent
- Wireless network management – 17 percent
- Windows administration (Server 2000/2003/2008) – 12 percent
