Huntingburg-based Superior Ag has acquired the Summit River Terminal along the Ohio River in Rockport with plans to further develop the site.
The agriculture cooperative says it is investing more than $20 million to build a 32,000-ton dry fertilizer distribution facility on the property and add up to 20 jobs.
The 18-acre site, located about 30 miles east of Evansville, currently has a small office building, a high-deck wharf barge, a truck scale, and a mooring cell in the river.
When the new Superior Ag Ohio River Terminal is complete, the co-op says it will include 10 large bins for segregation of different fertilizer types, a 600 tons-per-hour (TPH) barge receiving system that will be able to unload a full barge in three hours, and a 300 TPH truck receiving system that can offload one truck in five minutes, among other amenities.
“The construction of a dry fertilizer distribution facility on the Ohio River is a significant commitment that we have been carefully considering for several years,” CEO Richard Lloyd said in a news release. “This investment will play a pivotal role in enabling us to serve our customers more efficiently and profitably, and drive the growth of our business, ultimately positioning us to best support the needs of farmers now and in the future.”
A spokesperson for Superior Ag told Inside INdiana Business that an estimated 15-20 jobs will be added at the terminal, including distribution truck drivers and on-site personnel.
Construction is expected to begin early this year and take 12-18 months to complete.
Superior Ag has more than 2,700 members in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. Earlier this month the cooperative announced nearly $2.5 million in payouts to eligible farmer members.
