As state and local governments continue to modernize and integrate digital technology to help provide better services and connections with citizens, a strategy for adopting digital transformation, modernization and change management must also factor in creating an environment where the language you speak as a technology consultant means something to the public sector organizations you are serving. A few tips that can ensure complicated projects are put in terms that won’t be lost in translation across various departments and stakeholders within an organization are as follows:

Ensure business and IT alignment

Take the time to understand the specific needs and goals of the project. What are the challenges, priorities, and constraints? Business needs to drive IT decisions, not the other way around. It’s important to understand why an IT investment is needed to enable the growth of the business. By understanding the current state capabilities from an IT perspective and where they need to be to make a business decision happen will help get stakeholders on board. Vendors with a wealth of experience in both the public and private sectors are adept at understanding these nuances and engaging with stakeholders effectively.

Keep it short and simple

A necessity for implementing modern technologies across a large organization requires shifting away from technical jargon and acronyms when speaking with public sector clients. Use plain language and explain concepts in simple terms that are easy for non-technical individuals to understand. This helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page.

Provide context

When discussing technical solutions or issues, provide context to help clients understand why certain approaches are being recommended or why certain challenges exist. Frame technical discussions within the broader context of the agency’s goals and objectives. Lastly, use analogies and metaphors to illustrate complex technical concepts in terms that are familiar to the client. Drawing parallels to everyday experiences can make abstract ideas more tangible and easier to grasp.

Show and tell

Offer real-world examples or case studies that demonstrate how other government entities have successfully transitioned from traditional processes to automated solutions. Concrete examples can also help public sector clients visualize the potential benefits of proposed solutions and how they can help streamline processes and consolidate operations. For good measure, also utilize visual aids such as diagrams, charts, and presentations to supplement verbal communication. Visual representations can help clarify complex ideas and facilitate better understanding.

Improving government performance through modern technology is no longer an option; it’s a necessity. As agencies, CIOs and vendors begin the journey, fostering an environment of collaboration and concise communication in which everyone speaks the same language can significantly increase the likelihood of successful digital transformation and enhanced citizen engagement.
