Subaru’s Lafayette-built Ascent has made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The sport utility vehicle is the company’s largest ever and its production has led to expansion at Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., which is slated to host its own unveiling of the 2019 model Friday.
The plant, which is the only North American producer of Subarus, has experienced major growth over the last four-plus years. The facility opened in 1989 and last December, pumped out its five-millionth vehicle. Last year also marked the completion of $1.3 billion in investment that has led to some 2,000 jobs. SIA’s growth has also sparked activity at suppliers located in Indiana, including Fukai Toyotetsu Indiana Corp., which is planning to add more than 100 jobs in Jamestown.
Subaru Sales this year have continued to climb each month and year-to-date last month, were up more than 6 percent, compared to the first 10 months of 2016. The Ascent adds to the SIA production portfolio, which also includes Legacy, Outback and Impreza models.
