Study: Indiana Remains ‘Outbound’ State

The latest migration study from Evansville-based Atlas Van Lines Inc. says more people continue to move out of Indiana than move in. The study says Indiana ranks ninth among "outbound" states, with nearly 58 percent of Indiana moves being out-of-state.

Indiana has maintained its "outbound" status since 2007. The study shows 1,914 outbound moves for Indiana in 2016, compared with 1,389 inbound moves. Atlas Van Lines says the total number of interstate and interprovincial moves in the U.S. and Canada decreased by more than 2,000 in 2016.

"The moving industry as a whole has contracted annually over the last five years, but we have been fortunate to see a consistent increase in moves during that time until this year," said Jack Griffin, chief executive officer of Atlas World Group. "We are cautiously optimistic that we will see an uptick in 2017 for all types of moves, but we are aware of the economic headwinds that lie ahead of us."

Wyoming was the top-ranked "outbound" state with 63 percent out-of-state moves. Nebraska ranked second, followed by Illinois, Delaware, Louisiana, Connecticut, New York and West Virginia. Idaho, Oregon, North Carolina and Tennessee saw the highest amount of inbound moves.
