Study: Charitable Giving to Rise in 2017

A new study from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy says charitable giving in the U.S. is expected to increase over the next two years. The Philanthropy Outlook 2017 & 2018 says continued growth in the overall economy will lead to a rise in philanthropic giving.
The report says charitable giving will grow by 3.6 percent in 2017 and an additional 3.8 percent in 2018. Foundations are expected to see the highest growth in giving, followed by estates, individuals and corporations.
"Our research indicates that all types of donors—individuals, foundations, corporations and estates—are likely to increase their giving in each of the next two years," said Amir Pasic, dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. "Nonprofit organizations and the people they serve can find encouragement in the anticipated expansion of giving."
Una Osili, director of research for the school, says individual donors are responsible for the majority of charitable giving.
The report adds giving to the health sector is expected to grow by 8.5 percent in 2017 and 7.9 percent in 2018. Giving to education is projected to rise 6.3 percent in 2017 and 6 percent in 2018.
