Students Advance in TEAMS Competition
A record number of students took part this weekend in the annual Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science competition at Trine University in Angola. The university says 168 middle and high school students participated in the event, which was a qualifier for the national competition in June.
The one-day competition aims to help students discover their potential for engineering by using math and science to devise creative ways to solve real-world engineering challenges. The theme for the competition is "Engineering the Environment."
Teams first had to work together to complete a multiple-choice test and then, in the design/build challenge, the teams had to develop and test their solution to the project assigned to them.
"Team-building is very crucial for these kids," said Scott Vandygriff, math teacher and coach for the Discovery Middle School teams in Granger. "A lot of time they don’t get that type of opportunity in class."
The winners include:
- Division I (11th & 12th graders who have competed previously): Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne
- Division II (9th & 10th graders, plus new 11th & 12th graders): Penn High School in Mishawaka
- Middle School Division: Discovery Middle School Team B in Granger
The winners will take part in the national competition June 21-25 in Orlando, Florida. You can learn more about TEAMS by clicking here.
