State’s First Female Chief Justice to Take Oath

The first female Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court will take the oath of office Monday. Governor Mike Pence will administer the oath to Loretta Rush, a current associate justice on the high court. August 14, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The formal administration of the oath for Loretta H. Rush as Chief Justice of Indiana will take place on Monday, August 18. Chief Justice Brent E. Dickson announced the date when his colleague will officially become the leader of the high court and he will step down from his role as chief justice.

The brief ceremony will include remarks from Chief Justice Dickson and newly sworn-in Chief Justice Rush. Governor Pence will administer the oath of office. The ceremony will be brief—with current and former justices and appellate court judges.

In December 2012, Justice Rush was sworn-in as an associate justice during a one-hour public ceremony. On August 6, the Judicial Nominating Commission named her Indiana Chief Justice.
