State to Bring Coding Program to Prison

Indiana is planning to take part in a program aimed at training prison inmates nearing release in coding. Our partners at WIBC in Indianapolis report the state will launch "The Last Mile" program in 2018 in an effort to help inmates find jobs after release and help tech companies find skilled workers.

"The Last Mile" made its debut in 2014 at San Quentin State Prison in California. Since that time, the program has not only graduated about 20 inmates, it also led to the creation in 2016 of TLM Works, a software development company that employs graduates of the TLM program.

In Indiana, the program will be available to inmates with years-long records of good behavior and are nearing release, according to WIBC. Governor Eric Holcomb says successful graduates of the program will serve as an example of the ability to turn their lives around instead of falling back into old habits.
