State OKs New Nature Preserve in Brown County
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced the newest state-approved nature preserve. Lucas Hollow Nature Preserve in Brown County, brings the total number of sites protected by the Nature Preserves Act to 282.
The site is located within the Highland Rim Natural Region in the southeast central portion of the state. The Indiana Natural Resources Commission approved the designation earlier this month.
The DNR says the preserve "contains one of the best examples of relatively undisturbed mesic upland forest in that region of the state, characterized by Northern red oak, white ash, American beech, and sugar maple." It is being studied by scientists for 100 years as part of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment.
