Eight influential leaders have been recognized by the state as 2015 Torchbearer Award winners. This year’s class includes Indiana’s first female Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College President Dottie King.

Gilroy also won this year’s Trailblazer Award for her pioneering contributions.

The Indiana Commission for Women honors the winners each year for breaking down barriers and becoming "true beacons of light and their stories of courage, perseverance and compassion create a lasting legacy and inspiration for us all."

Winners are selected by a panel of previous award recipients.

In addition to King and Gilroy, the 2015 Class includes:

• Nimbilasha Cushing is a South Bend author and is the Lifetime Achievement Award winner for her "significant and fundamental contributions to moving Indiana women forward."
• Toby Stroud is executive director of Middle Way House in Bloomington and winner of the Heart of Indiana Award for opening "her heart and mind to the needs of humanity and who has demonstrated her commitment to philanthropic service, social change and the spirit of hope."
• Kathy Cabello is founder of Indianapolis marketing firm Cabello and Associates.
• Angie Lewis is chief of staff at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center.
• Cynthia Newman is founder of the Indianapolis-based Raising Queens Initiative.
• Kathy Schoettlin is executive vice president and chief community relations and social responsibility officer with Old National Bank (NYSE: ONB).
