Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie Lewis calls Angie's List Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ANGI) decision to put its proposed $40 million expansion project on hold because of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act “disheartening.” The council today is set to consider a resolution stating opposition to the new law. Governor Mike Pence is reiterating his stance that the act is about preventing government overreach and expects state legislators to introduce a clarification bill this week. Visit Indy Vice President Chris Gahl says city leaders are meeting with Gen Con organizers this week in hopes of convincing the massive event to stay in Indianapolis past 2020.

Gahl and IndyPolitics.org Publisher Abdul-Hakim Shabbaz spoke about fallout from the law this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television.

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — Angie's List (Nasdaq:ANGI) CEO Bill Oesterle today announced the company has pulled its proposed campus expansion project on Indianapolis' Near East Side from City-County Council consideration as a result of the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

“We are putting the 'Ford Building Project' on hold until we fully understand the implications of the freedom restoration act on our employees, both current and future,” said Angie's List CEO Bill Oesterle. The company was expected to break ground on the project within days.

“Angie's List is open to all and discriminates against none and we are hugely disappointed in what this bill represents,” said Oesterle.

The company will begin reviewing alternatives for the expansion of its headquarters immediately.
