The college says the $6 million from the trust of Mary Lee Sheftic will endow a scholarship and support the expansion of the Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex.
Sheftic graduated from Saint Mary’s College in 1958. She taught school for several years in Virginia before becoming vice president of the Peoples Bank and Trust. She passed away last year in Pennsylvania at the age of 78.
President Carol Ann Mooney says the endowed scholarship will help its students become "empowered" women, like Sheftic. Saint Mary’s Director of Athletics Julie Schroeder-Biek says the school’s donors "have helped us get up a mountain and this gift allowed us to put the flag at the summit."
The school is honoring the gift at a reception this afternoon at its Notre Dame campus.
