Work on the $38.5 million Sports Legends Experience, which is located on 7.5 acres next to the main building, officially started a year-and-a-half ago. Officials have pegged its overall economic impact, including construction, at $130 million over five years.
The museum describes it as a "sports Utopia," featuring 12 outdoor exhibits focusing on activities including: basketball, football, hockey, soccer, auto racing, golf, baseball, tennis, fitness, running and walking, as well as the Fantasy Tree House of Sports and the Avenue of Champions. It also includes three indoor experiences: The National Museum of Sport, The World of Sport and History of Hoops.
Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Patchen says the experience offers a "holistic view of family health and fitness." He adds "the goal was to create an outdoor and indoor experience to promote an active lifestyle in an immersive experience that would bring families together. We believe this extraordinary experience will motivate families to work together to create healthier habits that stay with them a lifetime. In the process, we will provide educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through sports."
The addition of the Sports Legends Experience expands the footprint of the Children’s Museum, which is already considered the largest of its kind in the world. The exhibit opens to the public at 10 a.m. Saturday.
