Sport Resort Moving Forward

Subscribe NowCatalyst Lifestyles LLC Managing Director Tony Czapla says site work on a more than 170-acre sports-focused development in northwest Indiana can begin. The city of Portage Common Council has approved the planned unit development agreement for the proposed $75 million Sport Resort project.
He says construction can’t begin until a final plan approval from the city’s Development Review Committee. Czapla says crews can start the excavation process for one of the project’s signature attractions, a lake geared for cable wakeboarding. He adds that much of the material will serve as fill to "re-balance" the site. To this point in the process, the plans have received unanimous support from the council. On Monday, plan commission gave it the green-light.
Czapla says the resort would be the first of its kind in the state and could serve as the first of 10 such resorts that he would ultimately like to initiate throughout the country. Plans for the Portage project include a total of three domed buildings to house activities ranging from multiple sport courts to an indoor drive-in movie theater to an indoor water park. A 150-room hotel and a self-powered light rail system are also part of the proposal. Czapla says the Porter County Sport Resort will give youth athletes and families the "D-I experience."
