Software Company Looks to ‘EduSource’ Talent

Friday, November 30, 2018 01:02 PM EDT
By Andy Ober

An Indianapolis-based software developer says it is saving money and getting higher-quality work by using a student apprenticeship program rather than outsourcing work. EduSource offers college students $40,000 and real-world experience alongside senior-level developers through a two-year apprenticeship. Founder Jason Beutler says he got the idea when his software engineering students at Taylor University were writing better code than an outsourced team he was overseeing.

EduSource, located on the north side of Indianapolis, is a custom software developer. Beutler says the company sources a lot of its talent from Taylor University and other non-traditional Indiana schools. In addition to providing companies with software they cannot find on the shelves, Beutler says EduSource is also training the next generation of software development talent.

During an interview on Inside INdiana Business With Gerry Dick, Beutler said he believes the model can be replicated.

"It’s something we’ve been working on over the last couple of years is systematizing this into a way that we can make this into something that can scale quickly," said Beutler, "and then we really provide that talent pipeline to more industries and to more organizations than just my own."

Last year, EduSource announced plans to expand its Carmel operations and add up to 30 jobs by 2019. At the time, the company said it would invest more than $1 million to lease a new office in the city to train students.

“We network networks.” In a bold stroke of bravado, Cisco Systems co-founder Sandy Lerner gave what is now known to be one of the most specific descriptions of her company that has ever been recorded. The statement, consisting of only three words, described EXACTLY what Cisco did as a company. And the rest is history....
