A nearly century-old Hoosier company is planning to change its image. Ellettsville-based Smithville Communications is rebranding itself as Smithville Fiber to further emphasize its focus on the high-speed technology. The company is in the process of creating what it calls the state's first “GigaCity” in Jasper, which refers to speeds of 1,000 mbps upstream and downstream.

In an effort similar to what Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has done in other states, Smithville says it will also launch Bloomington's Gigacity Fiberhood next week in the Monroe County City.

Recently, the company also hired John Patten as chief operating officer. He previously served as president of Wisconsin-based marketing and trade show exhibit company, MG Design Associates.
